My husband and I did a 4 day road trip around South Iceland in August 2023 as part of our Toronto / Norway trip. Even though we both got terrible allergies and couldnโt go outside in Reykjavรญk, we saw so much unbelievable scenery and can’t wait to return to explore more! Here are our favorite sights from the trip:
1. Jรถkulsรกrlรณn

Why Visit:
Jรถkulsรกrlรณn is a glacial lagoon and one of Icelandโs most magical, photogenic spots. Itโs a surreal mix of calm waters, bright blue icebergs, and the massive Vatnajรถkull glacier looming in the background.
Highlights:
- Boat tours โ sail among floating icebergs and learn about the lagoon from a local guide. Bundle up though, because it was cold!
- Diamond Beach โ a black sand beach just across the road where chunks of ice glisten like giant diamonds.
How to Go:
We booked our boat tour in advance on Glacier Lagoon‘s website. We walked across the road after the tour to visit Diamond Beach.
2. Svartifoss

Why Visit:
Svartifoss is one of Icelandโs most unique waterfalls. Itโs surrounded by basalt columns (natural pillars of hardened lava) that look like an organ pipe backdrop.
Highlights:
- Capture the striking contrast of white water cascading against black rock, with a hint of rainbow if you get lucky with weather.
- Enjoy scenic glacier views along the hiking trail. The first part of the trail was a bit steep, but it gets easier!
How to Go:
We parked at Skaftafell Visitor Center (parking fee required) and took a moderate 45-minute hike to reach the waterfall.
3. Reynisfjara Beach

Why Visit:
Reynisfjara is a world-famous black sand beach known for its dramatic basalt columns and crashing waves.
Highlights:
- Admire the tall basalt columns up close. I’ve included a picture of me for scale ๐
How to Go:
Thereโs a paid parking lot right next to the beach.
4. Gullfoss

Why Visit:
Gullfoss is one of Icelandโs most iconic waterfalls and a must-see stop along the popular Golden Circle route.
Highlights:
- Watch rainbows form in the mist on sunny days.
- Feel the thunderous power of the falls as the water plunges down two tiers into a canyon.
How to Go:
We parked for free at the Gullfoss Visitor Center, which has viewing platforms and a cafรฉ.
5. Fjaรฐrรกrgljรบfur Canyon

Why Visit:
Fjaรฐrรกrgljรบfur is a winding, moss-covered canyon carved by the Fjaรฐrรก River over millions of years. It became even more famous after appearing in a Justin Bieber music video Iโll Show You.
Highlights:
- Follow the short trail (~30 minutes) along the canyon rim to several beautiful viewpoints.
- Take in the iconic aerial view of the canyonโs serpentine shape at the final overlook.
How to Go:
Thereโs a paid parking area at the start of the trail.
