Whether it’s theme parks, museums, or city views, Los Angeles is a fun and delicious city with something for everyone. I’ve been to LA many times with friends and family (most recently in July 2021), but I’m still ready for more. Here are my favorite things to do from all those trips!
1. Disneyland

Why Visit:
Also known as the “The Happiest Place on Earth”, Disneyland is the first theme park opened by Disney and the only one built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney.
Highlights:
- Disneyland Park → the original park with parades and classic rides like Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Indiana Jones Adventure. End your night with fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle.
- California Adventure Park → California-inspired themes with modern franchises and more thrill rides like Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster, and Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark (my go to!). Instead of fireworks, there’s World of Color (water and light show) at night.
How to visit:
We drove to Anaheim (about 1–1.5 hours from downtown LA or LAX) and stayed at a hotel within walking distance of the park for convenience. Staying two nights gave us time to focus on a different park each day, though you could also visit both in one long day. We bought the 2-day park hopper pass (let’s you switch between parks midday) online in advance.
2. Universal Studios Hollywood

Why Visit:
A working film studio and a theme park with immersive lands based on iconic movie and television shows.
Highlights:
- Studio Tour → the park’s signature attraction, a tram tour through real working film sets and soundstages.
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter → step into Hogsmeade Village and explore Hogwarts Castle. I loved getting my own wand that let me cast spells at locations throughout the area!
- Super Nintendo World → the newest addition (opened in 2023), I need to check it out still!
How to visit:
The studio is ~30 minutes drive from downtown LA. We bought 1-day tickets online in advance since it’s cheaper than at the gate.
3. Griffith Observatory
Why Visit:
An observatory in Griffith Park offering a classic view of the city and the Hollywood Sign. It’s also featured in my favorite planetarium dance scene from La La Land.
Highlights:
- Enjoy panoramic views of LA from the terrace.
- Explore the free space exhibits and look through the telescope on clear nights.
How to visit:
The observatory is ~30 minutes drive from downtown LA.
4. The Getty Center

Why Visit:
A free museum with world-class art and beautifully designed gardens overlooking the city.
Highlights:
- View masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh and Monet.
- Stroll through gardens with seasonal flowers and greenery.
How to visit:
The museum is ~20 minutes drive from downtown LA. Admission is free, but requires a timed-entry reservation.
5. Enjoy the Food
Why Visit:
LA has an incredible food scene with a vast array of cuisines.
Highlights:
- Grand Central Market → a variety of local vendors.
- Koreatown → amazing BBQ (try the newly reopened Baekjeong).
- San Gabriel Valley → authentic Chinese food.
