Amsterdam is a charming city full of canals and incredible museums, but itโs even better when you know what to expect. Here are my top tips to help you make the most of your trip to Amsterdam.
1. Book Major Attractions in Advance
Anne Frank House always sells out, so make sure to reserve a timed ticket in advance. Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are also popular, so itโs helpful to pre-book those or visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
2. Weather Can Change Fast
Always bring a light rain jacket and layers! When I visited in the summer it rained half the time I was there.
3. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Amsterdamโs streets are cobblestoned, narrow, and often slippery after rain. Youโll walk a lot between neighborhoods and at museums, so itโs a good idea to pack and wear comfortable shoes.
4. Get a Museumkaart
If youโre planning to visit multiple museums, itโs worth getting a museum card. Most tourists buy the temporary version, which is valid for 31 days and allows up to 5 museum visits. I bought this and used it for all the museums I went to. Note that for places that require timed entry (Anne Frank, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum), the card covers the admission fee, but you still need to reserve a time slot (Anne Frank also charges a small โฌ1 booking fee). Another option is the I amsterdam City Card, but it doesnโt include Anne Frank or Van Gogh museum.
5. Be Careful When Crossing Bike Lanes
Amsterdam has more bikes than people and cycling is a deeply ingrained part of the culture. Bikes move fast and have the right of way, so make sure to look both ways before crossing.
