Edinburgh is a city full of charm and history โ with cobbled streets, medieval closes, and a skyline dominated by the castle. After visiting twice, here are my top five tips to help make your trip to Edinburgh smoother.
1. Book Attractions in Advance
Popular spots like Edinburgh Castle, Mary Kingโs Close, and the Royal Yacht Britannia often sell out, especially in summer. Book your tickets online in advance to save time and guarantee your preferred slot. Arrive early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds.
2. Always Carry a Rain Jacket
The weather changes quickly and can be windy at times. Pack layers and a rain jacket so youโre prepared.
3. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Edinburgh is built on seven hills, with cobbled streets and steep slopes (especially around the Old Town and Arthurโs Seat). Bring sturdy shoes or sneakers to explore more comfortably.
4. Join a Walking Tour
Walking tours are one of the best ways to experience Edinburgh since the city is compact and full of history. We joined a free walking tour and loved how much stories and humor our guide packed in. There are also themed options like Harry Potter, dark history, or food & whisky tasting tours.
5. Try Traditional Scottish Food
We loved the Scottish pies! Youโll find them all over Edinburgh, with classic fillings like minced beef or steak and ale, and even adventurous ones like haggis. Theyโre hearty, savory, and the perfect snack after climbing Edinburghโs hills.
