Top 5 Tips for Las Vegas

Planning a trip to Las Vegas? Here are my top tips to help you avoid common mistakes and make the most of your time in Vegas.

Las Vegas is fun, flashy, and full of surprises, but itโ€™s also a city where a little planning goes a long way. After multiple trips (most recently a short getaway with my husband), here are my top tips to help you make the most of your time in Las Vegas without unnecessary stress.

1. Reserve Restaurants in Advance

If there are any restaurants you want to try in Las Vegas, make sure to book well in advance. My husband and I couldn’t get a reservation for Bavette’s Steakhouse & Bar the week before. Someone on our tour also mentioned that Golden Steer Steakhouse often gets booked months ahead.

2. Smoking Areas Still Exist

Unlike the rest of the U.S. where smoking is rare indoors, most hotels allow smoking in the casino and it can be very unpleasant to walk through those areas. If youโ€™re sensitive to smoke like me, choose 100% non-smoking hotels. I stayed at The Reserve at Park MGM in my latest trip and loved being able to play casino games and eat near the casino without my lungs being attacked.

3. Prepare for Desert Weather

The desert air in Las Vegas is extremely dry, so make sure to drink plenty of water and bring moisturizer and lip balm to stay comfortable throughout the day. The sun can also be intense, so donโ€™t forget sunglasses and sunscreen.

4. Everything is Farther than it Looks

Not only does it take longer than you think to get between hotels because of pedestrian bridges and foot traffic, even just walking within a hotel can take awhile. Casinos are massive and easy to get lost in. If you have a show to catch, give yourself extra time since the theatre could be far from the pedestrian entrance or ride share drop-off. Wear comfortable shoes since youโ€™ll be walking a lot just to get around places.

5. Look for Low Limit Tables/Machines

If you just want to try casino games for fun, look for tables and machines with low minimum bets so your money lasts longer. Set a budget in advance and treat it as paid entertainment since youโ€™re almost guaranteed to lose it.
