Peru is full of incredible views and rich history. But between the high altitudes and the advance planning required for Machu Picchu, there are a few things worth knowing before you go. Here are my top five tips to help you plan a smoother, more enjoyable trip to Peru.
1. Book Machu Picchu Well in Advance
Tickets for the most popular circuit (Circuit 2) sell out quickly, so be sure to book well in advance to see all the highlights. And donโt forget your passport on the day! Youโll need it for entry.
2. Be Prepared for Altitude Sickness
Cusco is actually higher in altitude than Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley. My husband got altitude sickness in Cusco, which meant we couldnโt do as much as we planned. Even walking back to our hotel was a struggle since it was located uphill. To prepare, leave buffer time in your itinerary, consider staying at a lower altitude first, or bring some medication.
3. Leave Big Luggage Behind when Taking Trains
Checked baggage is not allowed on the trains to Machu Picchu. Youโll need to pack only what you need in a small bag or carry-on, and store your larger suitcases either at your hotel or in a luggage storage facility. We left our big luggages at our hotel in Cusco since it was easier logistically.
4. Wear Sturdy Good Shoes for the Terraces
The stone terraces in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are very steep and uneven, and climbing them can feel extra tiring at high altitude. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for comfort and stability. I wore my favorite hiking boots, and they worked perfectly.
5. Bring Layers for the Weather
Even in the dry season, mornings and evenings can be chilly, while midday can be hot. Pack layers so you can adjust throughout the day. A light rain jacket is also handy in case the weather changes unexpectedly. We got lucky and saw Machu Picchu in sunny weather, but our guide told us that it had been raining and foggy the day before we arrived.
