Top 5 Tips for Utah

Planning a trip to Utah? Here are my top five tips to help you plan a smoother and more enjoyable Utah adventure!

From red rock canyons to white salt flats, Utah offers some of the most diverse and otherworldly landscapes in the U.S. Whether youโ€™re planning a national park road trip or a quick desert getaway, a bit of preparation goes a long way. Here are my top five tips to help you make the most of your Utah adventure!

1. Plan Around the Seasons

I recommend visiting in spring or fall for the most comfortable hiking weather. Summer temperatures often exceed 100ยฐF (37ยฐC), and the parks can get crowded during school vacation season. In winter, some roads may close due to snow or ice.

2. Reserve Popular Parks Early

Some of Utahโ€™s most popular national parks (like Zion and Arches) require permits or reservations. The Angelโ€™s Landing permit lottery opens two months in advance and isnโ€™t guaranteed. My husband actually tried to get one for his parents but didnโ€™t win! The Arches timed-entry system opens six months before your visit and is first come first serve, so book early if you can.

3. Expect Long Drives

The national parks in Utah are spread far apart (except for Arches and Canyonlands), so plan for plenty of driving time by downloading offline maps and entertainment. We actually combined Zion and Bryce Canyon with parts of Arizona since they are closer to each other than the other parks in Utah.

4. Get the National Park Pass

If you’re visiting a multiple national parks, consider getting the America the Beautiful National Park Pass ($80 per year) in advance. It covers entrance fees for everyone in your vehicle (up to four adults) at all U.S. national parks and can save both money and time at the gate.

5. Be Prepared for the Desert Environment

The desert is beautiful but unforgiving. Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and bring hats and sunglasses. Many trails offer little shade, so plan hikes early or late in the day when itโ€™s cooler.
