After 10+ years in the SF Bay Area, I’ve turned plenty of long weekends into mini adventures. If you’re looking to go somewhere for a quick getaway, here are my favorite destinations within a two-hour flight of the Bay Area:
1. Los Angeles

Flight Time: ~1.5 hours
Best For: Theme parks, diverse food scenes, and iconic museums.
LA is the easiest and most versatile long weekend trip from SF. From top tier theme parks and museums to incredible food and iconic landmarks, there is something for everyone. Plus, there’s almost always good weather, so you can visit year round!
Pro Tip: Traffic is real and things are spread out. I recommend staying in a central area and focusing on just one or two neighborhoods to avoid spending your weekend on the highway.
2. Las Vegas

Flight Time: ~1.5 hours
Best For: World-class entertainment, nightlife, and luxury dining.
Vegas has incredible repeat value because there’s always new things to see and do. Most attractions are concentrated on the Strip, so you can pack a lot into a short trip without renting a car. While popular shows and restaurants require booking in advance, there’s plenty to do last minute.
Pro Tip: Hotels on the Strip can get pricey on holiday weekends. Consider using credit card points to save money.
3. Seattle

Flight Time: ~2 hours
Best For: A mix of urban exploration and Pacific Northwest nature.
Seattle offers a perfect balance of city life and outdoor adventure. You can explore museums and markets, or head out to nearby national parks for a hike. The downside is the rainy, cold winters and spring — my flight even got canceled due to weather! Summers are lovely though and Mount Rainier has beautiful wildflowers from July to September.
Pro Tip: If you enjoy skiing, there are several major resorts within 1-2 hours of the city.
4. San Diego

Flight Time: ~1.5 hours
Best For: Coastal relaxation and family-friendly attractions.
Similar to LA, San Diego offers year-round sunshine and iconic beaches. Unlike LA, it has a more laid-back beach town vibe and feels less crowded. It doesn’t have as many attractions as LA, but the zoo is fantastic and the Mexican food is some of the best in the country.
Pro Tip: Head to neighborhoods like La Jolla or North Park for authentic tacos and Baja-style seafood.
5. Portland

Flight Time: ~1.5 hours
Best For: Quirky counterculture and lush greenery.
Portland is famous for its indie spirit —”Keep Portland Weird” is the unofficial motto of Portland. It also has lush nature and a vibrant culinary and craft scene. The highlight for me was the various waterfalls and viewpoints along Columbia River Gorge. Similar to Seattle, it’s best during the summer unless you want to ski.
Pro Tip: Washington Park is an easy no-car option for nature — it has a rose garden, Japanese garden, and arboretum all in one spot.
